Publishing an Anthology for Nepal

Winners picture copy

Over one hundred poems and stories were submitted in the first stage of the English Department’s ‘Helping Hands’ creative writing competition which came to a conclusion in January.

After a tough week of judging, forty winning entries were selected for publication in the anthology which is due to be printed in the summer term.

The final anthology will contain short stories, flash fiction and poems written by St Chris students from across all year groups 7 – 13. The anthology has a ‘Helping Hands’ theme in recognition of the Nepal Charity appeal. All proceeds from the sale of the anthology will go towards the fundraising efforts for Nepal.

Anthology editor and English teacher Jamie O’Dowd said, ‘The quality was very high and we were particularly impressed with the creative ways our student writers interpreted the theme.’

Forty writers will now work with a teacher supervisor to edit and revise their work to a publishable standard. It is hoped that the students will develop a love for writing as a result of their participation in the project and be encouraged by seeing their work in print.

A separate competition is to be launched to find a winning design for the front cover alongside some illustrations which will accompany the poems and stories.

We are still keen to hear from any local businesses who may wish to support this project through sponsorship or advertising in the final anthology. Please contact Jamie.odowd@st-chris.net.
