The ‘Write’ Direction

The first week of 2013 saw the Infant and Junior School students welcoming award-winning author and illustrator, Paul Geraghty, who spoke to and worked with every year group over a two day period.  Paul, whose books have been translated into over 20 different languages, captivated the children with his unique and engaging presentation style and sense of humour, encouraging them to read, write, draw and think creatively.

During each presentation, he enthused and inspired the children as he offered readings from some of his most famous work and explained the stories behind some of the ideas that became books (and some that didn’t!).  He also reproduced a number of fantastic illustrations of some of the characters from his books, showing how a picture builds up from a “mess” (his words) to one that has developed form and perspective.

As well as his entertaining presentations, Paul visited a number of year groups.  He told stories, gave explanations about how a book is created and demonstrated the illustrator’s art of showing a variety of facial expressions.  He helped the children as they produced their own illustrations and talked to them about writing their own stories, which we look forward to reading very soon!
