A Date to Debate

Following the success of the inaugural BSME Debating Tournament in October, host school St Christopher’s was invited to take part in the long-running Debate Dubai tournament at Jumeirah College, on Saturday 24 November.

St Chris fielded 2 teams in the 14-and-under category, comprising students exclusively from Year 8.  Preparation was intense and concentrated – the teams were aware they would be among the youngest in their groups and strategised, hypothesised and supported each other accordingly.

Debate topics included the morality of tiger parenting, the rights of celebrity wrong-doers and whether the environment should be prioritised over the economy.

Both Team A and Team B performed exceptionally well, with Team B achieving a semi-final place in their category of 32 teams.  Jahnavi Sreevatsan, 8C, said: “It was a brilliant learning experience and we know that we can go on to win if we return next year.”

The students were a massive credit to their school: Adam Wilson, Clea Pariseau, Daniel Todd, Libby Caley, Erin O’Leary, Faye Weaver, Ghada Al Shehabi, Jahnavi Sreevatsan, Pireh Moosa, Riva Kapoor and Suad Eljawhari from Year 10 who accompanied our colleagues from the British School of Bahrain in the 16-and-under-category.
