Player of the Season: Sulaf Al Jabal

Most Improved Player: Jessica Gardiner

This year, with the introduction of the new sports league there was a fresh approach to how the Junior league was structured. The season started back on 7 September, when St Christopher’s, The British School, and Bahrain School all played in a “Mixer Tournament”. Over 40 players were selected in teams from all 3 schools and played a Volleyball tournament. All players had a great experience and enjoyed the tournament. Then followed weekly tournaments with the 3 schools. St Christopher’s entered 2 teams in these events. After winning the league, A and B teams were selected and played in a championship tournament. During the thrilling tournament all games went to the third set creating a tense atmosphere. We narrowly lost two of our three games by two points, which meant that the tournament came down to points difference, resulting in St Christopher’s being placed in third place. The season was outstanding with great participation levels from the girls at every opportunity, fantastic sportspersonship, excellent facilities and outstanding standards of performances by the students. A great season all round, well done on your success.

This year’s Intermediate Girls Volleyball League consisted of four schools: Bahrain school, RVIS, BSB and St Christopher’s. All of these schools had an A team and a B team apart from RVIS and over a period of 7 weeks we travelled to Bahrain School every Monday to play in a series of friendly matches. St Christopher’s A Squad won all of their matches apart from 1. The B Squad improved every week and, by the end of the 7 weeks, only lost a couple of games. For the Finals Tournament, the A Squad played all the other A teams from the schoosl and won all our matches so finished Champions of the League. The B Squad had a very successful Tournament and finished Runners Up. It was a great season and we enjoyed it very much. We became very close with our teammates and were able to improve our teamwork each week. Our team is like our family and we would like to thank Mrs Hobday and Mrs McKay for coaching us and helping us to improve each week.

The Senior Girls Volleyball Team enjoyed a very successful season with matches played on a home and away basis against BSB, Bahrain School and RVIS. The games against BSB and RVIS were won very convincingly and leading up to the Final game against Bahrain School, we were in Runners up place for the League. Our home fixture against Bahrain School resulted in a narrow loss and in this game, we played our best volleyball all season losing only 15-11 in the final set. Unfortunately, the Bahrain School were too strong for us on their home court and we lost in 2 sets. However, we had a fantastic season and finished Runners Up in both the League and the Tournament. This season, we say good bye to Cayla Harris, Razan Al Musawi and Kianna Legg who are leaving at the end of Year 13. They have been dedicated members of the Squad and their commitment to the school team has been immense. We wish them well and hope they carry on paying Volleyball wherever they go next. Well done, girls!

Intermediate Boys

The 2016 Volleyball season saw the start of a new and exciting league involving the BSB, The Bahrain School and St Christopher’s. Each school entered two teams and we played a series of Festivals, with the season concluding in a dramatic final tournament. Teams grew from strength to strength over the weeks, skill levels became more diverse and teamwork matured. The A Team deservedly won every Festival, with the B Team eventually taking third place behind the BSB A team. However, in the first game of the Final Tournament, the B Team played against the A Team. The B Team, under the guidance of Mr Tayler, kept their cool, worked steadily as a team and defeated the A Team. It was a tremendous display of teamwork, which is undoubtedly what led them to their victory. This became the kick-start the A Team needed and, with a new sense of desire and urgency, went on to win the rest of the matches and the overall tournament. Only on points difference did BSB A take 2nd place, with the St Christopher’s B team taking a very worthy 3rd place. A tremendous season for all concerned and one the boys should be very proud of. Most Improved Player of the A Team is Ollie Bloodsworth and for the B Team is Mohammed Shehab. The Player of the Season for the A Team is Colby Altman and Connor Clifton for the B Team.

Senior Boys

With a mix of youth and experience, the Senior Boys Volleyball Squad was determined to do well this year. After a shaky start and a narrow three set victory over The British School of Bahrain, things settled down nicely with an easy victory at Riffa Views International School. Good quality training led to a feeling of confidence heading over to the Bahrain School. However, without their usual coach, they struggled to come to terms with the power hitting of the American boys and lost in three sets. Unfortunately, academic pressures started to eat into practice time and despite two comfortable straight set wins against RVIS and BSB, yet again the boys from the Bahrain School beat us. At times the quality of play from both teams was sublime. Unfortunately for us, their consistency was better than ours! Sadly, we must say goodbye to Harry Bricklebank, Nabil Kahn and Jonas Abdulwahab. However, with three year 10 students all making this year’s team, the future looks bright. Player of the Season was awarded to Harry Bricklebank and Most Improved Player to Pavle Ognjenovic
