Playing the Court

The St Christopher’s School U16 Boys and Girls Hockey teams were able to display their Hockey prowess at the recent National Sports Day celebration organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee.  Playing on an indoor surface usually reserved for National Volleyball matches, the sides were pitted against a Combined School’s team, comprising individuals from a number of British, American and Asian educational establishments. Both were able to dominate the opposition. In the Boys team, Donovan Worrall led the scoring with four goals, closely followed by Llewelyn Forward with a hat trick, while George Axtell added a couple from defence after mazy runs.  Luanga Kasanga helped the Boys maintain a clean sheet. The Girls game was a much tighter affair initially with the match scoreless for the first ten minutes.  However, approaching half-time, the floodgates opened as Charlie Axtell scored a hat trick with Anna Evans-Woolf and Chelsea Maher adding a goal apiece.  After the interval, Charlie added two more, ably assisted by Daisy Dennison and Hannah Ericsson.  The game was umpired and coached by Nelmari Burns, a former South African State-level player and umpire who commented on the excellent passing and teamwork displayed by the Girls. At the end of the session, the teams were mixed to allow the children to interact and collaborate with the players from the other schools. The next opportunity for the Hockey teams will be at the Mini-Olympics in March, also organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee.
