Young Musicians of the Gulf 2018

The 19th annual Young Musicians of the Gulf competition reached its dramatic conclusion on Thursday evening when St Christopher’s student, Mohammed Alnajjar (MoMo) was announced as the overall winner of YMOG 2018.  This decision was greeted by a rapturous audience and a standing ovation that lasted many minutes. MoMo’s performances throughout the week were described by the adjudicators as ‘something really special’ and that he was a very worthy winner. St Christopher’s success did not end there as Zoe Lascelles Lloyd was awarded the trophy for best Brass player and Benedict Brandreth the prize for Best Original Composition. A total of nine individuals and groups from St Christopher’s made it through to the semi-finals and this is testament to all the hard work from the students and their teachers. In total, 129 students from across the Gulf took part in this year’s competition and the standard of musicianship was higher than ever. Planning has already started to make YMOG 2019, the Competitions twentieth year, a very special event. However, one thing that will be missing at the Final next year is the speech given in his own inimitable style by our Principal, Ed Goodwin.  Ed and his wife Wendy have played a huge part in the organisation and running of the event since its inception and will be sorely missed by all.
