Liquid Words

This year, the poetic theme was water…

Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
Water, water, everywhere,

And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.

Extract from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Coleridge

“Poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world; it makes familiar objects be as if they were not familiar”, so said Percy Bysshe Shelley, the great Romantic poet.

Years 7 – 9 truly lifted the veil from the hidden beauty of water this year. The submissions for the watery poetry competition were fantastic and very creative. The competition entries and winners are on display in Isa Town Reception, together with some wonderful examples of the work Years 7 – 9 have completed in English lessons.

Year 7 have also been involved in a sponsored poetry recital, raising money for “Room to Read”, a charity that aims to improve children’s education and literacy in impoverished areas of the world

And what a wonderful, watery day Year 4 and Year 7 had participating in the English Department’s Poetry Workshop at Isa Town. With Year 7 as their teachers, Year 4 wrote watery narrative poems telling stories about a ship at sea. The poems were then turned into origami poems and floated out on the water of the swimming pool.

Thank you to all who were involved.
